Networking FAQ
What is DHCP?
DHCP(Dynamic Host Control Protocol) is used to dynamically assign network related information such as IP address, netmask, gateway and DNS server from a given IP pool.
What is PPPoE?
PPPoE is not generally available in the UK.
PPPoE(PPP over Ethernet) is used by ISP to authenticate the user over the Ethernet interface, usually used in the dial-up ADSL configurations. Users send their usernames and passwords through PPPoE to the ISP and then get the IP related information from the ISP side.
What is NAT?
NAT(Network Address Translation) and NAPT(Network Address and Port Translation) is used to share one or several public IP addresses among a large number of IP devices. The NAT server translates between the internal/private IP addresses and ports to the public IP addresses and ports to avoid port conflicts and then make the communications go through.
What is gatekeeper?
Gatekeeper is a network device that keeps track of all audio/video calls and also translates between phone numbers, names and IP address. Subscribers have to register on the gatekeeper before they can use the service.
What is MCU?
MCU is a network device which controls multi-port conferences. The detailed operation of the MCU is dependent on the implementation of the MCU. Please contact the vendor of the MCU for further information.
What if I turn on DHCP option but there is no available DHCP server?
for about 30 seconds after bootup, the phone will display `looking for IP address`. After this time, the phone will boot, but there will be no dialtone. At this stage you can go into the menu to turn off the use DHCP option and provide manual IP settings.
What if I turn on gatekeeper option but the gatekeeper is unavailable?
If gatekeeper is not available, you can not use phone numbers to dial calls. The phone will display an error message on the screen informing you that the gatekeeper connection failed.
What if I input the wrong PPP username or password?
There will be no dialtone when you lift the handset or press the hand-free keys to inform you that PPPoE negotiation is failed.
When NAT is applied, will everything work after I turn on the NAT option?
No. You have to setup static port mapping on the router in advance. Redirect the ports used by the videophone to the IP address of IP videophone. Turn on the NAT option of IP videophone and put the public IP address of the router into the NAT door field of IP videophone. Then the communication can proceed.
Can I dial phone numbers when gatekeeper is off?
No. When gatekeeper is turned off or the gatekeeper is not available, you can not dial by phone number.
How can I use an MCU through the IP Videophone?
Please refer to the manual provided by the vendors of the MCU. You can follow the procedures described on it to make conference calls.
Can I connect to VoIP devices through the IP Videophone?
Yes, you can follow the same procedure as you do to make video calls. But video function is not supported when you connect to VoIP devices.
Can I connect to PSTN phones through the IP videophone?
Yes, but H.323/PSTN gateway is required to support such calls.
Can I connect to H.320 or H.324 video phones through the IP videophone?
Yes, but H.323/H.320/H.324 gateway is required to support such calls.
